‘AFGHAN’ - prose by Benne van der Velde published on Double Dutch magazine!

Foreword:

Erik works at a coffeeshop in his hometown, playing host, serving drinks, and selling weed and hashish. Having quit himself only recently he’s easily triggered, sentimental as only former stoners can get, and keeps a journal to document his day-to-day life and make sense of the changes he goes through. And then there’s this fascination with the enigmatic army veteran John…

Obviously based on his own experience, writer and poet Benne van der Velde tells a significantly more than less autobiographic tale about one of the most (in)famous Dutch tourist destinations worldwide, the evolution of the official Dutch policies surrounding the Herb as well as a story about an intelligent, charming dealer who doubts, tries hard to better himself, dares to be vulnerable, struggles, writes, runs and fights. A special but most of all genuinely human slice of life centered in a scene that’s still cluttered with stereotypes and viewed with plenty of bias.

Just to be absolutely clear, an advocate for the daily use of Ganja he isn’t. His story gets right up in your face, it’s hilarious, sometimes uncomfortably honest, manic, surprisingly spiritual, quite virtuoso and very old school hardcore.

Ménage à deux (a dialogue in pieces) by Benne van der Velde published on Double Dutch magazine!

Foreword:

“And he never again did. Talk to me. Since 2001… Why, hi there! Between 1998 and 2001 Benne penned down 5000+ pages of internal dialogue. To be able to do that he wrote 10 pages per day, every day aboard the Ferry where he worked at the time, and, somehow, came up with me: Erik. Erik Ergo. Nice to meet you, I’m sure.

The last couple of years he’s been fiddling with it practically non-stop, and, if anything, he hopes we pieced together a result that reads like a fucking bullet train and does justice to what stuck with him the most after reworking a selection of about 500 pages from those 5000+ into the volume in front of you. The amount of energy committed to just about anything he set his mind to at the time. How we drove each other onward, relentlessly, and often made things so much harder than needed or healthy in the process. But in hindsight, talk is cheap. Even a shit load of it. We talked ourselves into some unnecessary and often easily avoidable frenzies, and he himself into a serious mental breakdown by the end of us, in the French Pyrenees. But boy oh boys, we sure were alive!

For the rhythm, getting more than lost in The Process, stumbling in, and out, and back in love, one overlapping, unattainable (duh!) amorous French connection, friends and family, and yes, for the sex, those fucking drugs and an emerging career as a poet.

You don’t have to like us from back then, or even sympathize. Wholesome we were most certainly not, nor always in tune with the blistering heat we radiated. For those negatively affected, sorry about that…? We tried so, so hard. Being unbearably young and much, much too beautiful.

It was a trip. 29 trips a day, every work day, to be more accurate. In your face, unapologetically hardcore and yet, at the same time, completely vulnerable. Imperial, butt naked Odysseys across some Dutch river. With, after all these years, this unique ego/slice of life and Zeitgeist document to show for it. A love story like no other we know of. So, if nothing else we guess there’s that, at least.”

New segment: Going Dutchtube!

I’ve been scouring the internet for Dutch poetry, translated into English, to maybe showcase here for a couple of months now, and have been loving every second of it. That includes YouTube, obviously, and boys oh boys, there are some beauties out there! Plus, not unimportant, linking and then highlighting such a video here on Double Dutch magazine is A LOT easier copyright wise? So much so that we at Double Dutch magazine decided to start a whole new segment: Going Dutchtube!, for which we’ll pick one of those videos at a time and give ‘em some much deserved extra fondling. Doing this also enables us to include poets and translators we admire but who are notoriously hard to get in touch with, for example, or, again, whose poetry is a real pain in the butt to get the rights to. Win-win, eh? We sure think so. Starting said segment off, therefore, is the esteemed writer and translator David Colmer, who’s reading his magnificent translation of De mislukte fee by the Dutch writer, poet and full on icon Annie M.G. Schmidt on the excellent channel Translators Aloud. Please enjoy!

Double Dutch issue nr. 0 has gone live!

We’re up and running! Double Dutch magazine issue nr. 0 has officially gone live :) We’re so, so proud of this little magazine we’ve put together, and can’t wait for you, our readers, to experience and enjoy everything Double Dutch magazine has to offer. We plan to publish a new issue very other month, starting with issue nr. 1 in January 2026, which is looking very solid because the first submissions have already started to come in!

Thank you so very much for that.

In the mean time we hope you’ll take your sweet time reading/looking through what we’ve been able to put together so far? We chose music we admire for the sheer audacity of it, for its inherent painful truth, or just the ‘in your face’ energy it exhumes. Onno has gone very personal with the art he wanted to show, choosing pieces he actually came face to face with, where I have searched the webs for poetry that has, on one way or another, touched generations (and snuck some of my own stuff in there as well, obviously.) We are especially proud, though, of our first ‘Dutch treat’ section, with contributions from

• our current Dutch national poet laureate Babs Gons,

  whose poem got translated by the poetry/translation legend Donald Gardner

• the Dutch ‘Beatles of poetry’ rolled into one Ingmar Heytze,

  translated by no other than Robert Dorsman

• Gerard Nolst Trenité

• one of my more favorite poets: (can relate to his restlessness I guess) J. Slauerhoff,

  who got the full on, awards winning Paul Vincent treatment

• a national treasure in cabaret/musical writing in the person of poet/lyricist Guus vleugel (R.I.P.)

• and last but most (sorry others!) my personal hero the poet/writer/lyricist Rob Chrispijn, who I WILL be featuring and publishing more of in the near and not so near future!

We want to give a special shout out to our long time friend and artist Frans de Winter, for allowing us to use one of his beautiful art pieces as cover art for our issue nr. 0! Thanks mate.
