Double Dutch is a new online literary(/music/art?) mag that strives to publish an issue every other month.
Although there’s always room in our little corner of the interwebs for truly exceptional work about the just, the right, the beautiful, the struggle and so forth, we started this magazine to first and formost support/spot light the poets, lyricists and artists that, in this overly sensitive day and age, find their work getting rejected elsewhere simply because their choice of words or imagery might offend. Or because a well crafted point of view (past or present) exhibited does not comply with the current consensus of what IS healthy, just, right, moral, etc, etc. And don’t get us wrong, some world views just are despicable. There’s genius poetry out there, though, about wanting to destroy something beautiful, manipulation, continuous rejection or proper self loathing for example. Poetry, lyrics and imagery that truly show case the full extend of the human condition. We like rough around the edges, to be hit over the head. Work that needed to be made. No. Matter. What.
You’ll find no newsletter to subscribe to. There are no subscription tiers, nor exclusive content. No contests. No real community building to speak of neither. We simply can’t be bothered, to be honest. + that sounds like a lot of work. Energy we’d rather invest in creating, and, just as important, maintaining a basic, lo-fi online literary(/music/art) magazine that looks good and show cases an ever-expanding library of carefully handpicked poetry (/music/art?) from around the world. Any genre will do. If they’re original, show your craftsmanship at work and are written(/performed) in English.
Obviously, our team does have their personal preferences when it comes to subject matters, styles, feelz, schools etcetera and what not. Read our already published pre-inaugural issue to get a feel for what those are? It is the only issue in which our team got to show off some their own work, as well as more than a few favorite examples of work by others (from no-brainer classics to lesser known pieces) we personally admire.
There is another side to this initiative that we would love to bring to your attention as well. Being a Dutch team, it should come as no surprise that we feel a lot of Dutch/Flemish poetry and lyrics lend themselves to be translated/re-written in English perfectly. There are so many beautiful stories out there that deserve an even wider, international audience, and we from Double Dutch are making it our mission to showcase the very best examples of those translations/re-writes/covers. Shining a light on not only the original story-telling master classes at display but the talented Dutch/Flemish authors/lyricists/poets behind those AND the translators in question too.
Finally, there’s a ‘Featured’ section also, in which we (with irregular intervals), zoom in on a particular poet/lyricist/artist more closely.
