We want your poetry/music/art! But, to be blunt, we can be annoyingly picky at the same time? We’re different from a lot of magazines out there in the sense that while we aim for a lot of things, pleasing is NOT one of them. Quality beats subject matter and/or choice of language every time. We applaud the outspoken. More about that here. And to be totally fair, we just love us a bit of old fashioned controversy? This means we’re not for everybody. So be it. It DOES however also give us a shot, as a magazine, to truly stand out. Or so we like to tell ourselves. Dream big, eh? Want in on that dream? We’re proud to be able to partner up with Duotrope/Duosuma for this exact purpose! So, sign up (if you haven’t already) and send us your very best, then. Oh, and here’s a few other ways in which we distinguish ourselves:
Published a specific poem (or got a track reviewed) before and want to try again here? Sure. If you blow us away with it, it deserves a spot. But just to be clear, if it doesn’t, try and live with it? Thanks. We make no difference between you having published it on your blog, or, for example, in The New Yorker. Tastes have a funny tendency to differ.
Have you used AI to help you write a verse (or track) that turns our world upside down? If you can show us how it complemented your own talents and If you’re honest about it, right here please!
Yet again: does your submission include profanities, racism, violence or other ways it might offend, and you feel the need to explain yourself? Why? The work should speak for itself. If it serves a purpose we understand, and we agree with why it’s necessary, your creative endeavor might very well find a home with us.
Simultaneous submissions are fine. It’s not like we are actively going to check beforehand, or afterwards. Previously published work is eligible. If that happens in the meantime and you want it mentioned, we’re sure you’ll let us know.
If you are a fan of a particular Dutch or Flemish lyricist or poet and want them and their work highlighted, send us your best translation effort in English, alongside the original work and their permission, and who knows!
Rights acquired by us upon publication: none. Zero. Zilch. Mention us when you get the same piece published somewhere else? Or don’t. If you let us know, though, we’ll gladly add this accomplishment to the info piece accompanying your poem/music/art on our webpage!
Upload your written submission in docx, your music through a YouTube and/or Soundcloud link and your visual pieces in PDF, .png or .jpeg, please. Send your definitive versions. We don’t like back and forths. Up to 3 poems/links/images max. We also ask for a bio. 100 words max. A cover letter is optional.
We’re not charging a fee to read your work, listen to your track or look at your art. We’d love to start compensating you for publishing your work with us, and do so in a way we feel is appropriate and truly represents its worth (a minimum of 50 dollars per piece per genre). A quick calculation: 10 poems + 10 tracks + 10 pieces of art and as much Dutch treats as possible per issue, and then there are the annual costs for the website, third party submission related and other required memberships, domain etc, etc… Yeah. LOQ. Labour of love indeed! So, yeah, sorry, but as long as we remain unfunded or otherwise unsubsidized, we’re afraid this party will very much be a quintessential Dutch one. Want to help (a lot)? You could tip our jar!
Please wait with submitting again until you’ve heard from us? And allow us a couple of months to do so. We strive to publish an issue every other month, so we WILL be in touch, pinky promise.
So! After all of that, if you still think we’re a good match and want to give it a shot, thank you again, and you can do so right here:
