Gegrond/Wall

Frans de Winter (24-08-1977) is an artist pur sang, having been classically schooled at the Royal academy of Art in Den Haag (1995-2000) and the Frank Mohr institute M.F.A. Painting in Groningen (2000-2001). His work has been exhibited internationally, one being a solo showing as part of the 2014 Geuzenpenning ceremony, and he curated multiple art exhibitions over the last 2 decades himself. His work has been part of multiple showings. His new website is still under construction, but when that’s up and running Double Dutch magazine will be Featuring Frans for sure!

The original title of this monumental work, unveiled in 2022, was ‘Wall’. Frans wanted to honor all of those directly affected by the atrocities of war, and specifically the Ukrainians who got invaded earlier that year. It symbolizes the mental wall all of the above mentioned have had to break through just to keep going. That it officially ended up as ‘Gegrond’ is due to another link attached at a later stage of its inception. When the city of Vlaardingen commissioned this work from Frans the also wanted it to commemorate the battle of Vlaardingen (1018), during which count Dirk III defeated the German army.
