DAVID HOCKNEY
Nicole Montagne(Gouda, 1961) studied Printmaking (Vrije Grafiek) at the art academy in Utrecht and Cultural Studies at the Open University. In 1984, she interned in Prague. She has participated in exhibitions both at home and abroad with her visual work, and her art is held in various collections. In 1998, she won the Dutch Printmaking Prize (Nederlandse Grafiekprijs). In 2003, a monograph on her graphic work was published by Waanders Publishers. Montagne lives in Utrecht and, since 2012, also partly in Brandenburg an der Havel.
In 2005, she made her debut with the essay and short story collection ‘De neef van Delvaux’ (Vantilt Publishers). This collection was nominated for the Jan Hanlo Essay Prize and the KANTL Essay Prize (Belgium). In 2007, Montagne received the C.C.S. Crone Scholarship from the City of Utrecht. Her second book, ‘Souvenir’ (prose), was published in 2009 by Cossee Publishers and was nominated for the Vrouw & Kultuur Debuut Prize 2010. In January 2014, ‘Een makelaar in Pruisen’ (Vantilt) was published, and in 2018, ‘De verzuimcoördinator’ (both essay and short story collections) was published by Wereldbibliotheek. In January 2023, ‘Het keizerpanorama’, a novel, was released by Wereldbibliotheek as well.
Nicole Montagne mentors aspiring writers and is affiliated with the Schrijversvakschool in Amsterdam as a lecturer in essay and narrative non-fiction. For HUB Utrecht, she provides courses for editors at DUIC and RTV-Utrecht. Additionally, she publishes regularly in literary magazines and writes texts for visual artists (among others).
Since 2022, she has been a member of AICA-Netherlands, the association of (publishing) art critics, curators, academics, and museum professionals.
From January 2024, she was an external reader at the Dutch Literature Fund (Nederlands Letterenfonds). This entails reading fiction and non-fiction, and drafting reports for work grant applications from Dutch authors.
From January 2026 onwards, she is a member of the Advisory Board of former mentioned Dutch Literature Fund. A member of this Advisory Board assesses—together with the other members—the quality of submitted literary work and grant applications a few times a year.
